IPL Photofacial

The IPL Photofacial sends specialized light waves beneath your skin’s surface where they target unwanted pigment and damaged blood vessels. Unlike standard lasers that zero in on just one concern, this Intense Pulsed Light therapy tackles multiple skin issues in a single session. When pigmented cells absorb the light energy, it transforms into heat, shattering excess melanin while stimulating your body’s natural collagen factories. The results? Those stubborn brown spots from summers past begin to fade, redness diminishes, and your skin’s underlying architecture strengthens. No wonder IPL for skin rejuvenation has become a go-to solution for folks who want visible improvements without the extended recovery time of more aggressive treatments.

What to Expect from an IPL Photofacial Session

First, we’ll clean your face and provide special eyewear to shield your vision from the bright pulses. Cool gel goes on next, helping the handpiece glide smoothly while maximizing comfort. During your IPL Photofacial treatment, you’ll feel quick zaps against your skin—many clients compare it to the snap of a warm rubber band. The entire process wraps up in about half an hour, though larger areas may take longer. Afterward, your skin might look slightly flushed, similar to a mild windburn. This typically fades within a few hours. We’ll send you home with simple care instructions: keep the area protected from sun exposure, moisturize generously, and apply sunscreen religiously. Most people need 3-5 monthly sessions for optimal results.

Who is a candidate for an IPL photofacial?

The hallmarks of an ideal IPL Photofacial candidate? Frustration with sun spots, visible capillaries, or persistent facial redness that makeup can’t quite hide. Since this technology distinguishes between normal tissue and problem areas based on color contrast, those with lighter complexions generally see the most dramatic improvements. But IPL for skin isn’t universally suitable. Pregnant women should wait, as should anyone who’s taken Accutane within six months or uses photosensitizing medications.

Got keloid scarring tendencies? This probably isn’t your best option. And if you’re blessed with deeply melanated skin, we might steer you toward other treatments that won’t risk disrupting your natural pigmentation. Even that golden vacation tan (real or spray-on) can interfere with results and increase side effects. That’s why we always start with a thorough consultation—your skin tells a unique story that helps us determine if IPL photofacial treatment makes sense for your specific situation.

Redness
IPL heats the skin and blood vessels below the surface. Hemoglobin then absorbs the light pulses, and heats up rapidly—destroying the capillaries and vessels that contribute to the appearance of redness.
Hyperpigmentation treatment and prevention infographic.
Hyperpigmentation
During your treatment, specific wavelengths of light interact with red and brown pigments in the skin, which break up excess melanin. For marks left behind by breakouts, see our acne scar treatment page.
Key tips for better tone and skin texture.
Tone & Texture
During your treatment, light is converted into heat energy, which reignites collagen & elastin production—leading to smoother, more even-toned skin.

How It Works
Step 1: Pulsed Light Photothermolysis
Bright flashes of light deliver specific wavelengths which target red and brown pigments in the skin.

How It Works
Step 2: Melanin Breakdown
The light and heat causes these unwanted pigments to break down into smaller particles, which will slowly fade and disappear through the body’s natural healing process.

Step 3: Smooth & Clear Skin
The remaining melanin particles rise to the skin’s surface and flake away, leaving the skin smooth and clear.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the IPL laser photofacial best for?
The IPL laser works by targeting pigment in the skin, so it is best suited to fairer skin tones and is not advisable for skin with more active pigment. Not sure whether you are a candidate? Book a complimentary consultation and a licensed medical professional will assess your skin. If IPL is not the right fit, we will talk you through the facial and microneedling options on our menu that are.
When will I see results?
Most people notice clearer, more even skin within 1-2 weeks. Pigment keeps clearing for several weeks after that, so the change is usually most visible about a month after your final session. Individual results vary.
What does it feel like?
The IPL laser feels similar to laser hair removal — most clients compare it to a rubber band snapping against the skin. It is brief and manageable, and afterwards the area feels a little like mild sunburn for a few hours.
What do you mean by “exfoliating active ingredients?”
These are ingredients in your skincare that cause physical or chemical exfoliation, such as acids, non-prescription retinols, benzoyl peroxide, and scrubs.
Is this a good treatment for melasma?
Melasma needs a gentler approach than IPL. Book a complimentary consultation and we will look at whether a Hydrafacial or a SkinCeuticals European facial is a better starting point for your skin.
Can I work out after?
Plan on getting your workout in before your treatment, as you should refrain from sweat-inducing activities for a few days following your session.
Can I book this right before an event?
Avoid scheduling this treatment 1-2 weeks before a big event, as you may experience redness, darkening of pigmented spots, and flaking after treatment.
What skincare routine should I follow after treatment?
Begin using a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF as recommended by your provider.
