Redness
IPL heats the skin and blood vessels below the surface. Hemoglobin then absorbs the light pulses, and heats up rapidly—destroying the capillaries and vessels that contribute to the appearance of redness.

Hyperpigmentation
During your treatment, specific wavelengths of light interact with red and brown pigments in the skin, which break up excess melanin.
Key tips for better tone and skin texture.
Tone & Texture
During your treatment, light is converted into heat energy, which reignites collagen & elastin production—leading to smoother, more even-toned skin.

Step 2: Melanin Breakdown
The light and heat causes these unwanted pigments to break down into smaller particles, which will slowly fade and disappear through the body's natural healing process.

Step 3: Smooth & Clear Skin

Lumecca IPL Photofacial at A Glance

Detailed guide: no sun and retinol restrictions.
Before Your Treatment
  • Stop retinol use 10 days before your treatment, and exfoliating active ingredients at least 1 week before.
  • Wait to book Lumecca IPL if you’ve had other Ever/Body facial treatments—with the exception of Hydrafacial™—within the past 2 weeks.
  • If you’ve recently been sunburned, wait 4 weeks before this treatment.
  • If you have a fresh tan—either sun-made or artificial—wait 2 weeks before this treatment.
Reminder to use SPF for skin protection.
After Your Treatment

Limit sun exposure for 1 week after treatment, and wear sunscreen daily to protect your skin.

You’ll notice dark spots rise to the surface of your skin within 1-2 days. That’s totally normal, and a sign that the treatment is working! Allow them to flake off on their own over the next 1-2 weeks to prevent hyperpigmentation. No picking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is Lumecca IPL Photofacial best for?
Laser IPL works by targeting the melanin—pigment—in the skin. Because of this, IPL is only suitable for those with very fair skin. It is not advisable for those with more active pigment or melanocytes. Not sure if you’re a candidate? Chat with our providers and book a complimentary consultation to see if it’s right for you. Alternatively, our Clear + Brilliant laser facial and VI Peel are great options for any skin tone.
When will I see results?
You'll begin to see an improvement in skin within 1-2 weeks. However, the results continue to improve over time, and you'll likely see the best results about 1 month after your last treatment.
What does it feel like?
Laser IPL feels similar to laser hair removal, which is a bit like a rubber band snapping against skin. It's not the most comfortable, but very tolerable. After the treatment, it'll feel like you have a mild sunburn.
What do you mean by “exfoliating active ingredients?”
These are ingredients in your skincare that cause physical or chemical exfoliation, such as acids, non-prescription retinols, benzoyl peroxide, and scrubs.
Is this a good treatment for melasma?
If you have melasma, we recommend booking either a medical grade Hydrafacial chemical peel, which can also be booked with us.
Can I work out after?
Plan on getting your workout in before your treatment, as you should refrain from sweat-inducing activities for a few days following your session.
Can I book this right before an event?
Avoid scheduling this treatment 1-2 weeks before a big event, as you may experience redness, darkening of pigmented spots, and flaking after treatment.
What skincare routine should I follow after treatment?
Begin using a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF as recommended by your provider.
